Tumbleweed’s Boys House provides shelter, counseling, job development, educational services, tutoring, and skill building for boys placed by the Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare systems. Eight of the boys are placed in a Detention Alternative Program (DAP) directly from Maricopa County Juvenile Court. They are delinquent and in need of a short term structured living environment and most are enrolled in an intensive, research based model of family therapy, Functional Family Therapy, as most of these young men will return home. For those that won’t return home, longer term placement beds are available and focus is on independent livings skills, pre-vocational skills, work experience and education.
Current Program Goals:
Staff would like to be able to have the clients participate in some type of animal-assisted therapy program, whether from donations to fund participation in an existing program or a volunteer to provide the service.
Staff Quotes:
“The Boys House gives young men the opportunity to develop better coping skills in a safe and caring environment.” – Esperanza Popoca
Client Quotes:
“The Boys House gave me a chance when no one else would. They kept me out of jail and let me learn how to behave so I would not go back.” – Client NB
Volunteer Opportunities:
Barber/Beautician – A licensed beautician or barber is needed to teach clients about proper hair and/or nail care, especially for clients of mixed ethnic backgrounds who do not know how to care for their hair type. Free or reduced priced hair cuts would be a phenomenal one time or ongoing gift.
Chef/Cook - We would love to have someone help us prepare dinner on our first family night of each month, when we provide meals for all our kids and their families.
