May 21, 2015 Thanks to a grant from the Hickey Foundation, Tumbleweed is rolling out a new mobile service to reach homeless youth in cities around the Valley. A 15-passenger van and accompanying 16-ft trailer will feature on-board services that closely match what young people can find in our brick-and mortar facilities.

On-board computers will help homeless youth find work or locate relatives. Our clients will also find a showers, clothes washing machines, food to eat on the spot and to take away, and backpacks filled with basic supplies such as hygiene items and snack foods.

Tumbleweed staff will also be available to help young people find additional resources and complete the journey from homelessness to independent young adulthood.

May 21, 2015 Tumbleweed is getting ready for a June 2 ribbon cutting at the Starlight Apartments at 2234 W. Hazelwood. In a first-time partnership, we have joined with Chicanos por la Causa to make this happen. CPLC bought and renovated the 44-room facility, and we will operate a housing program for young people aged 16-19 who are transitioning from foster care or homelessness.

It’s a benefit to the neighborhood, too, as the facility has been a sore spot and a blight in the past. With a lot of great input and teamwork from the City of Phoenix and the Westwood Neighborhood Association, the renovated building should be a great success story on many levels.

May 6, 2015 D5 Maricopa County Supervisor Steve Gallardo visited Tumbleweed, bringing home-made chicken and spaghetti with red sauce to serve more than 30 young people at our Phoenix Youth Resource Center on East McDowell Road today.

Steve enjoys cooking and is looking forward to visiting each month with a homemade meal. He is very passionate about youth homelessness and is determined to see Maricopa County play a bigger role in helping homeless young people.

Everyone was delighted with the food and his open, friendly manner, and we were so glad his staff members were there to help out, too. Tumbleweed is really looking forward to building a lasting friendship with Supervisor Gallardo!
