TumbleTees is a youth-run T-shirt screen printing business located within Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development’s Drop In Gallery (DIG) in the heart of the Roosevelt Arts District. TumbleTees employs homeless youth ages 14-21 and youth in transitional housing, and group homes for under 18. Through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) our youth receive payment for a 3 month, 240 hour internship from Goodwill and YMCA.
The youth are taught the skills of screen printing tshirts, and also learn vocational and entrepreneurial skills. They have the opportunity to learn real life business skills while also being able to be creative and design their own tshirts and develop marketing strategies and partners in the community. TumbleTees strives to empower youth to experience successes and feelings of hope that are necessary for them to transition into a life of self-sufficiency, while also stimulating creative growth.
TumbleTees is currently subsidized from grants and funding from the Tumbleweed Phoenix Drop-In Center, and proceeds from fulfilling tshirt orders. We strive to serve local small business, other non-profits, and the downtown arts district by providing quality, low priced custom t-shirts with a mission of supporting local at-risk youth in the community. The main objective for 2009 is to continue to grow financially so that we can upgrade equipment, employ more youth, and become self-sustainable.
